More About Custom Molding Solutions

May 28, 2017 by dave

Although many companies offer molding services, Technical Specialties Company, Inc. has decades of experience providing rubber o rings, beginning with our inception in 1942.

Industries that Depend on Custom Molding

Although any industry may have a need for a custom molded part, some that depend on these parts regularly include the military, aerospace, automotive, household appliance, and electronics industries. As a result, not only is the part’s functionality important, but qualities like aesthetics, performance, and longevity can also be factors.

Obviously, the goal is for companies to manufacture products that meet or exceed the customer’s expectations. In order for that to happen, the final product has to be of superior quality, even down to the smallest details. That’s why many of our customers have come to expect parts with improved UV and chemical resistance, better sealing capacity and reduced vibration and shock.

Molding Processes

The custom molding processes offered by Technical Specialties Company, Inc. include compression, transfer and injection molding.

  • Compression Molding – With the compression molding process, the raw material is placed between two molded plates. Then plates are forced together, the material compresses and both heat and pressure cause it to conform to the cavities in the plates. Finally, any excess material is trimmed and the part cures. This method is often utilized when a medium precision part is required.

  • Transfer Molding – With the transfer molding process, the raw material is inserted via a preform transfer pot into the mold cavity.  The preform rubber is heated, forced into a funnel shaped opening down into the mold cavity with a plunger, where it cures and is eventually ejected from the mold. This method is used for medium to high precision parts or instances when colored molded parts are needed.

  • Injection Molding – During the injection molding process, the raw material is heated and fed into the mold cavity via an injection nozzle. The rubber cures, and the molded part is then ejected from the mold. This method is ideal when a large volume of medium to high precision parts is needed.

To ensure your absolute satisfaction, Technical Specialties Company, Inc. will work with you to determine the most suitable materials and the manufacturing process that will best meet your application. Contact us today and let us help you identify if a custom molded part is right for you.
