Hollow extruded o-rings are often used for applications where the o-ring is subjected to a lot of compression. They are a great substitute for foam and sponge gaskets, offering better compression set resistance as well as greater durability. Because of their longer life, they are especially useful for hard-to-reach locations where replacement is difficult.
Another benefit of extruded and spliced o-rings is that little to no tooling is required to create custom cross sections and diameters. This makes them much more economical to produce than molded o-rings, especially for shorter production runs.
Extruded o-rings with asymmetrical solid or hollow cross-sections can also be used for interference-fit designs in seal grooves, for easy assembly without adhesives or clamps.
