The Importance of Rubber O-Rings

February 12, 2016 by dave

From materials and design to prototyping services, testing, and manufacturing, Technical Specialties Company, Inc. is your one stop source for rubber O-rings, gaskets and seals.

Some people do not give much thought to rubber extrusions or fully understand the important service they provide. Regardless of the industry or application, these components have a key role, primarily to ensure machinery, equipment, and accessories function properly.

Typical Sizes and Material

There are many different sizes of O-rings, including both metric and imperial. O-rings are designed with different characteristics, including internal dimension “id,” outer dimension “od,” and thickness/cross section “cs.”

Along with varying sizes, numerous materials are used to create O-rings. The actual type of O-ring used will depend on several factors, such as application temperature, lubrication requirements, chemical compatibility, sealing pressure, size, durometer, and cost. A few examples of the materials used are as follows:

  • Butadiene Rubber
  • Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene

  • Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer

  • Fluorelastomer

  • Melt Processible Rubber

  • Nitrile Rubber

  • Polyacrylate

  • Polysulfide Rubber

  • Sanifluor

  • Silicon Rubber

  • Thermoplastic Elastomer

Technical Specialties Company, Inc. has been providing custom, high quality O-Rings to a wide variety of industries since our inception in 1942. We will work with you to design and fabricate the right component for your application. Contact us today!
